Lake Level Change From Satellite Altimetry Over Seasonally Ice-Covered Lakes in the Mackenzie River Basin

چکیده
Variations in water levels of seasonally ice-covered subarctic lakes are indicators environmental and climatic change. Satellite altimetry enables remote sensing these lakes, but the lake phenology is problematic as radar reflection surfaces include water, snow, ice. Reflection from multiple gives rise to two-peak waveforms across lakes. Misinterpretation altimetric height has caused extracted be low compared with gauge data. In this study, a modified retracker used determine heights first subwaveform. Using in situ snow depth ice thickness, surface shown correspond closely snow/ice interface when frozen. The applied Great Bear Lake (GBL), Slave (GSL), Athabasca (ATL) Mackenzie River Basin for period 1992–2020. With an Std levels, TOPEX/Poseidon less accurate than combined Jason missions (Std: 0.07 m).

A Preliminary Analysis of Lake Level and Water Storage Changes over Lakes Baikal and Balkhash from Satellite Altimetry and Gravimetry
Lakes Baikal and Balkhash are two of the world’s major lakes affecting fresh water supplies in their catchments. Measurements from satellite altimetry (TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1 and -2), satellite gravimetry (GRACE) and a hydrological model (LDAS) are used to see the relationship between lake level change (LLC) and water storage change in these two lakes. At Lake Baikal, the average rate of LLC i...
متن کاملEstimating Snow Mass and Peak River Flows for the Mackenzie River Basin Using GRACE Satellite Observations
Flooding is projected to increase with climate change in many parts of the world. Floods in cold regions are commonly a result of snowmelt during the spring break-up. The peak river flow (Qpeak) for the Mackenzie River, located in northwest Canada, is modelled using the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite observations. Compared with the observed Qpeak at a downstream hydro...
متن کاملWater Level Fluctuations in the Congo Basin Derived from ENVISAT Satellite Altimetry
In the Congo Basin, the elevated vulnerability of food security and the water supply implies that sustainable development strategies must incorporate the effects of climate change on hydrological regimes. However, the lack of observational hydro-climatic data over the past decades strongly limits the number of studies investigating the effects of climate change in the Congo Basin. We present th...
متن کاملSoil moisture retrieval over the Mackenzie River basin using AMSR-E 6.9 GHz brightness temperature
An approach is proposed to estimate soil moisture and to monitor its change from AMSR-E 6.9 GHz passive microwave data acquired over a large northern basin. The lack of in situ direct measurements is a major issue to be resolved to reach the aim of this work. Therefore, “external” ancillary data were used as a surrogate for available measurements. The methodology is based on the inversion of a ...
متن کاملIce loss processes in the Seal Nunataks ice shelf region from satellite altimetry and imagery
The Seal Nunataks ice shelf (SNIS, ∼743 km in 2013) is an unofficial name for a remnant area between the former Larsen A and Larsen B ice shelves off the northeastern Antarctic Peninsula. Analyses using Landsat 7 ETM+ and Terra ASTER images from 2001 to 13 and ICESat altimetry from 2003 to 09 show it has retreated and thinned following the Larsen A (1995) and Larsen B (2002) disintegrations. De...
